Jamie Raskin Sues Trump For Blocking Access To Federal Immigration Facilities

House Judiciary Committee Democrats announced: Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, joined a dozen individual members of the U.S. House of Representatives in suing the Trump-Vance Administration, challenging its unlawful obstruction of congressional oversight that the members have sought to conduct at federal immigration detention facilities, in which both citizens and noncitizens have been detained without due process. The Administration has implemented a new, unlawful policy that blocks these Members of Congress from obtaining the information necessary to perform their constitutional duty to ensure the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is complying with federal law in operating these facilities and to oversee how billions in taxpayer dollars are being spent. The Administration is mandating a seven-day waiting period and prohibiting access to field offices where people are being detained, despite a federal law that prevents these restrictions. The lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia demands that the Administration comply with a federal law that guarantees Members of Congress the right to conduct oversight visits to any DHS and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sites where noncitizens are detained without prior notice. Other plaintiffs include Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse; Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Rep. Adriano Espaillat; Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Rep. Bennie G. Thompson; House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Ranking Member Rep. Robert Garcia; House Homeland Security Committee Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement Ranking Member Rep. J. Luis Correa; Rep. Jason Crow; Rep. Veronica Escobar; Rep. Dan Goldman; Rep. Jimmy Gomez; Rep. Raul Ruiz; and Rep. Norma Torres. At a time when the Administration is detaining more individuals than ever before—over 58,000 people—and reports of mistreatment, overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and the detention of U.S. citizens are growing, the need for real-time, on-the-ground oversight has never been more urgent. Eleven people have died in immigration custody in the first six months of this Administration. DHS’s recent mass layoffs of internal oversight personnel only deepen the concerns about this conduct and possible abuse. At a time when private citizens are intervening to stop ICE from grabbing and detaining people off the streets, it is vital that members of Congress have access to immigration facilities. Read more

Trump’s FDA chief proves he’s absolutely clueless about public health

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Martin Makary appeared on CNBC on Wednesday, where host Joe Kernen asked him about Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin’s announcement on greenhouse gases. Zeldin stated that the Trump administration will rescind the 2009 scientific findings on the harmful effects of greenhouse gases on human health. That led to this infuriating exchange: Kernen: They’re going to do this. Is that a danger to public health? If the EPA and Lee Zeldin are able to do this, in your view? Makary: You know, to be honest, I don’t know enough about that issue.  Kernen: You’re in charge of our public health. Can you look into it for us? Makary: So it’s really an EPA issue. But look, there’s a lot of things where we may just need better research. We have never talked about environmental exposures that may, say, cause cancer. We only talk about the chemo to treat it. YouTube Video So much dumb in a minute.  Makary came to prominence as one of the ignoramouses who offered loud criticisms of COVID-19 mandates and skepticism over the deadliness of the pandemic, and he appears to be less of a public health expert and more an expert in public misinformation. His claim that “we have never talked about environmental exposures that may, say, cause cancer,” is so absurd, it is difficult to even grasp the lie he’s promoting. The official EPA website devotes a significant part of its mission to identifying cancer-causing agents. The FDA has similarly worked for decades in this area—while also being responsible for approving treatments for cancer patients. In May, Zeldin announced the administration’s plans to rescind rules that limited “forever chemicals” in drinking water. The chemicals in question have been linked to cancers, reproductive and neurological problems, and low birth weights.  But I’m sure Makary doesn’t “know enough about that issue,” either.

As GOP moves to rig the map in Texas, Democrats gear up for a fight

Texas Republicans on Tuesday released a proposed new congressional map that could oust as many as five Democrats from Congress—a desperate ploy by the GOP to rig the 2026 midterm elections to prevent the House from turning blue. President Donald Trump demanded that Texas redraw their map to help Republicans gerrymander their way to victory, amid fears that voter backlash to his unpopular agenda would cause the GOP to lose its House majority. If Democrats were to retake the chamber, it would effectively end Trump’s legislative priorities and pave the way for congressional probes into his corrupt conduct.  Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has now heeded that demand. Earlier in July, he called for a special session for the Republican-controlled legislature to pass a new congressional map that would make districts so GOP heavy that Democrats have no chance at winning them.  Democrats have slammed Republicans’ overt effort to rig the midterms, and say they are working on plans to retaliate in kind. Republican state Rep. Carl H. Tepper of Texas looks through congressional district maps at the Texas Capitol on July 24. “Donald Trump asks for 5 seats and Greg Abbott automatically bends the knee. The 2026 election is being rigged. California won’t sit back and watch this happen,” Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California wrote in a post on X, referring to his idea to suspend California’s independent redistricting commission and redraw the maps in a way that squeezes out more Democratic seats. Key players in the state say they support that effort, to avoid having to fight for control of Congress with one hand tied behind their backs. “I stand by the work of the commission of course. We drew fair and competitive maps that fully abided by federal laws around the Voting Rights Act to ensure communities of color have an equal opportunity at the ballot box,” Sara Sadhwani, a politics professor at Pomona College and member of the state’s 2021 independent redistricting commission, told the Los Angeles Times. “That being said, especially when it comes to Congress, most certainly California playing fair puts Democrats at a disadvantage nationally.” “I think it’s patriotic to fight against what appears to be our democracy falling into what appears to be authoritarian rule,” she added. Democrats in New York are also weighing a bill to allow the state to redraw its map early. But NBC News reported that the redraw wouldn’t take effect until after the 2026 midterms. President Donald Trump talks with California Gov. Gavin Newsom after arriving on Air Force One in Los Angeles on Jan. 24. Meanwhile, groups in Wisconsin have filed multiple lawsuits seeking to get the state’s current congressional map—in which Republicans control six of the state’s eight seats—tossed out. However, the state Supreme Court declined to hear two of those challenges.  The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which seeks to elect Democrats to the House, also said it anticipates lawsuits to block Texas’ map—if and when it’s passed by the Legislature. “From the beginning of this broken process, Texas Republicans’ only objective has been to follow orders from DC party bosses desperate to try and save House Republicans’ teetering majority,” DCCC Executive Director Julie Merz said in a statement. “We’re still evaluating the proposed map. At first look, Texas Republicans appear to have made what is already one of the country’s most racially discriminatory maps even worse. Should this map become law, we anticipate Texas will get sued and the map will get struck down. Regardless, DCCC is ready to recruit aggressively to unseat every single newly vulnerable Republican who went along with this corrupt scheme.” It’s unclear, however, if any of these efforts will work—or take place in time to counter Texas’ naked power-grab. “Donald Trump knows he can’t win the midterm election fair and square. So he’s trying to rig the rules in Texas before an election even happens,” Rep. Greg Cesar, a Texas Democrat whose district would be redrawn by his state’s Republican majority, posted on social media Monday night. “But if Trump’s insane redistricting plan succeeds in Texas, no state in the country is safe.”

Trump administration steps up its heinous war on trans people

In a move that was likely inevitable considering how much anti-trans animus drives President Donald Trump’s administration, the Federal Trade Commission has launched a formal inquiry into whether health providers are making deceptive claims about gender-affirming care. Let’s face it—there is no world where the FTC is going to engage in a measured, science-based assessment. The fix has been wholly in since the FTC announced the invite-only workshop, which promised a veritable cavalcade of anti-trans activists, but claimed details had to be secret “for the safety of participants.” Yes, the real victims, the truly vulnerable among us, are people who have dedicated themselves to attacking trans kids, not the trans kids themselves.  Unsurprisingly, the secret workshop stuffed with anti-trans people somehow raised enough concerns that the formal inquiry is warranted. If you’d like to see the proceedings of that workshop to see what was presented for yourself? Lol, nope. You can read some super transphobic statements from FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson and Commissioner Melissa Holyoak, but that’s about it.  Now, based on the workshop you can’t watch, the FTC is soliciting public comments about gender-affirming care, but only wants to hear from people who think it’s bad. The questions are insanely biased, asking people to report whether a doctor who prescribes gender-affirming care described all the risks, provided material from “other sources” about those risks, and told them about the political controversy over such care or that some states have prohibited that care for minors. Also, of course, did the doctor pressure you or your child to transition?  While those are all questions targeted at those who have received gender-affirming care, the FTC made sure to include catch-all questions to solicit comments from the most rabid anti-trans types who have no connection whatsoever to the provision of gender-affirming care. The agency is asking people to report “any individuals, entities, or institutions that have promoted, advertised, or otherwise made public representations” about gender-affirming care and whether they are aware of any “false representations” about gender-affirming care.  The only “false representations” being made about gender-affirming care are those being made by anti-trans activists who insist that all the science is wrong for … reasons. Every major medical organization has said that gender-affirming care for minors is safe. But, as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas noted in his concurrence in U.S. v. Skremetti, no one should listen to “self-proclaimed experts” because they have “no license to countermand the ‘wisdom, fairness, or logic of legislative choices.” As long as Thomas or anyone else just has a vibe that gender-affirming care hurts kids, it’s cool to discriminate.  No one has really been able to explain how prescribing puberty blockers for minors with gender dysphoria is dangerous, but prescribing the same thing for non-trans minors for things like precocious puberty is totally safe. Seems like science isn’t a conservative thing these days, now is it? Instead of science, we get stuff like the Department of Health and Human Services’ 409-page “report” on the dangers of gender-affirming care. HHS withheld the names of the authors because nothing says you stand behind something like an anonymous report. It was criticized for its research methods, as the report concluded that a systematic review of the evidence shows a “growing body of evidence pointing to significant risks.” But the actual systematic review in the report doesn’t show that. Oops.  Actual medical organizations came forward to explain all the ways in which the report was wrong. Susan Kressly, the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, issued a statement saying they were not consulted for the report, yet it still discussed AAP’s policies and recommendations in a misleading way. Shutting out the doctors who actually provide medical care to children is certainly a choice.  Related | Inside Trump’s bigoted push to ban girls from school sports The only “treatment” that the report endorses is “exploratory therapy,” which might sound relatively benign but is code for conversion therapy, where LGBTQ+ minors are pressured to be straight. Here’s some actual scientific research from the American Psychological Association explaining that conversion therapy actually harms people. Studies show people experience a loss of sexual interest, depression, anxiety, and suicidal impulses. Also, studies show that it just doesn’t work and that an enduring change in sexual orientation or gender identity is unlikely.  Unfortunately, none of this actual science matters. HHS doesn’t care what the science says. The FTC doesn’t care what the science says. Donald Trump doesn’t care what the science says, and the conservatives on the nation’s highest court definitely do not care what the science says.  The FTC’s solicitation of comments from transphobic cranks is the perfect distillation of Trump world. It’s anti-science, ignoring every major medical organization in favor of whatever misinformation is published by The New York Times. It’s also viciously anti-trans, pretending that bigots are the real sufferers when really it is transgender people who face violence, with one in four transgender adults saying they have been physically attacked and nearly two-thirds reporting being verbally attacked. Forty-one percent said they were harassed or felt unsafe in restrooms and locker rooms. They also experience widespread prejudice and discrimination. If the Trump administration has its way, things are about to get a lot worse.

New poll finds Trump in hot water over Epstein scandal

President Donald Trump’s attempt to spin the ongoing Jeffrey Epstein scandal as no big deal and not a problem for him and his party has turned out to be a massive failure, according to a recently released Economist/YouGov poll. The poll, conducted July 25-28, finds that  a strong majority of Americans think the government is covering up evidence about the accused sex trafficker, and nearly half believe Trump was involved in crimes with his old friend. Forty-six percent of Americans believe Trump was “involved in crimes allegedly committed by Jeffrey Epstein.” That conclusion has strong support among Democrats (80%) and independents (47%), but it even has double-digit support—11%—among Republicans. Jeffrey Epstein, shown in a 2017 photo provided by the New York State Sex Offender Registry. Epstein was accused of sex-trafficking underage girls before his death in prison in 2019. The Trump administration is refusing to release government files on Epstein, including a rumored client list that could implicate others in crimes. The poll shows that this is a very unpopular position. Eighty-two percent of Americans, including 76% of Republicans, say the files should be released. Worse for Trump, 67% think a government cover-up is underway. That includes a plurality of Republicans (46%) in the poll. On top of that, most Americans (61%) disapprove of Trump’s handling of the case. Trump has spent weeks fuming about the case as it resurfaced in the news. Not only has he lashed out at the press and Democrats, but he has even scolded MAGA supporters for discussing the issue. When he’s not complaining about the story existing, Trump has pushed the false narrative that Epstein-related stories have boosted his popularity. This is a blatant lie. The Economist/YouGov poll echoes other opinion polling showing the public doesn’t trust Trump on the issue and rates his handling as poor. His allies at the right-wing Fox News have tried to downplay the story, as have congressional Republicans who continue to shut down inquiries into the scandal and related crimes. Republicans have even tried to concoct a conspiracy-riddled story about former President Barack Obama as a way to combat negative Trump/Epstein headlines. It hasn’t worked. Despite this public flailing and bad polling, mainstream outlets like the Washington Post have continued to carry water for the administration. On Wednesday, the Post—owned by Trump ally Jeff Bezos—ran a story headlined “As MAGA storm over Epstein calms, White House plans next steps.” But this story is far from over.
